I write about my life and life itself seen through my eyes for who can write through the experiences of others if not their own?

Poor Kids

The stories I heard were compelling and drenched in intense sorrow. Kids, unfortunate kids ages 5 to 15 in the streets of Colombia work for a living.

One of them, a 13 year old prostitute asked by her mother to work the streets to help support her family, recounting her experience, said that she prefers old men because they can’t do much.

It is a hard life for them. It is the only life they know.

These kids have been receiving help in the form of an adaptation program implemented by a teacher and sponsored by the Department of Education that provides them with a place to go after work and with tools to find a way out of their misery. They have received help until now…

The new Secretary of Education does not feel the initiative to help underprivileged kids is worth keeping and the program has been put on hold. It is not a priority on the Secretary’s agenda.

Stories like these put everything in perspective. Somehow the cross we bear seems lighter and lighter.
