I write about my life and life itself seen through my eyes for who can write through the experiences of others if not their own?

Am I Too Critical???

Monster 5K and 10K

The Monster 5K and 10K has been around for over 20 years. Named after the once prominent Monster Golf Course, the race once drew over a thousand participants. When in 2000 the Rotary club decided not to continue, a group of us ran it unofficially, an action that would later lead to the formation of the Sullivan Striders.

The following year the Sullivan Striders assisted the new race director with a runners' perspective and ironed out some of the major faults of the race, convincing the businessmen of the Rotary to start the race at 8:45 a.m. instead of 9:15 and to keep the chute open until the last runner crossed it. In early August, with temperatures easily in the 80’s, many occasional runners take over an hour the complete the hilly course. I was once one of them.

Since 2001, the race has drawn an average of 250 runners. Seven years later the same race director continues to organize the race and 7 years later the same mistakes continue to be made. When the numbers are the same year after year, you would think that supplies would be ordered accordingly…not the case here. There is never enough water for the staggers and never enough food but the price continues to increase…

One good thing of today’s race is that my daughter won the 5K race, not her best time and obviously not enough competition but all I have to say is YAY!!!
